6-phosphate in the first step of glycolysis is severely impaired. This decreases pyruvate and tehn acetyl-CoA production for use in the Tricyclic Acid Cycle (TCA). Due to this, amino acids must be used to produce acetyl-CoA. They are also used to form glucose and to form ketones. The amino acids generally come from muscle tissure, thus causing weakness and weight loss. In addition, increased relative glucagon lowers the relative level of fructose-2, 6-biphosphate, inhibiting glycolysis and stimulating glyconeogenesis.
